Search is one of the first steps in almost every reporting process. But as the internet changes, the way journalists find information has to change too.
AI-generated summaries, evolving search tools and the sheer amount of information available online can make it harder to find the documents, sources and details that matter. Journalists need new strategies to search more effectively, verify what they find and uncover information that may be hidden beneath the surface.
To help journalists adapt their research strategies to this changing digital landscape, the Knight Center and Indicator are offering a new low-cost webinar series: “Search in the Age of AI: How to Find What (and Who) You’re Looking For.” Led by investigative journalist and OSINT expert Craig Silverman, the five-week series will explore practical techniques for finding information faster, investigating online and using AI tools as part of a stronger reporting workflow.

Craig Silverman is an award-winning journalist known for his work on misinformation, verification and digital investigations. Silverman is the co-founder of Indicator, a publication focused on open-source intelligence and investigative techniques, and has trained journalists around the world on how to use digital tools to find and verify information.
The series focuses on techniques journalists can use immediately: building better searches, finding hard-to-locate documents, investigating people and organizations online, verifying digital content, and using AI tools to support, not replace, the reporting process.
Across five weekly sessions, participants will learn how to:
- Build more effective search queries and find better sources.
- Use advanced search techniques, including search operators and Google dorking, to uncover documents and information that are not easy to find.
- Search across social media platforms and verify images, videos and other digital content.
- Investigate people, companies and online networks using digital identifiers such as emails, phone numbers and usernames.
- Use AI tools to analyze documents, organize research and support investigative reporting.
The sessions will include demonstrations, examples and practical exercises that journalists can apply directly to their own reporting. Participants will also receive access to session recordings and supporting materials.
Registration is $99 and includes access to all five live sessions, webinar recordings, a certificate upon completion, two months of access to all Indicator content, enhanced access to OSINT Navigator, and two exclusive members-only Indicator workshops.
By the end of the series, participants will know how to adapt their search strategies in the age of AI and combine traditional research methods with new tools to find, verify and analyze information more effectively.
If you want to improve your digital research process and uncover stronger sources, documents and leads for your reporting, register now for “Search in the Age of AI: How to Find What (and Who) You’re Looking For.”
The webinar series begins August 4, 2026, and includes five live sessions held every Tuesday through September 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET (90 minutes each).
As search continues to evolve, these skills will help journalists adapt their research strategies and uncover the information they need to report more accurately and effectively.
