He was also part of the Alpha Group, an internal research and development team that built Subtext, an SMS subscription platform that lets journalists and news organizations communicate directly with their audiences by text.
Cohn has spent his career at the intersection of journalism and technology, working on some of the earliest experiments in crowdfunded journalism, distributed reporting, and mobile-first news. In 2008, he created the first platform to crowdfund journalism. He went on to serve as Chief Content Officer of Circa, a startup that pioneered “atomized” or object-oriented news for mobile, and later as an executive producer at AJ+, where he helped lead Al Jazeera’s transformation from a broadcast organization to a digital operation.
His writing has appeared in Wired, Columbia Journalism Review, The New York Times, and other publications. He has taught as a lecturer at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and as a fellow at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri.
