Podcasting for journalists: Creating audio stories that connect with audiences

This post is available in: English

Stories are not only meant to be read. Sometimes, the human voice, a moment of silence, or the sounds of a place can reveal details and emotions that are difficult to capture in text alone.

As podcasts continue to be an important format for journalism, many reporters and news organizations are looking for ways to create audio stories that engage listeners. But producing a successful podcast requires more than recording an interview. It involves developing strong ideas, understanding audio storytelling techniques, making thoughtful production choices, and finding ways to reach listeners.

To help journalists explore podcasting as a storytelling format, the Knight Center is offering a new online webinar series: “Podcasting for Journalists: How to Create Audio Stories That Reach Audiences.” Led by editorial strategy and audio storytelling consultant Tamar Charney, the two-session series will guide participants through the process of developing, producing and sharing journalism podcasts that inform, engage and connect with audiences.

Tamar Charney is an experienced audio journalist and strategist who has worked with media organizations, public media outlets and journalists on audio storytelling, digital strategy and audience development. Charney previously served as a senior editorial leader at NPR, where she helped develop projects including NPR One, NPR’s Collaborative Journalism Network and the award-winning podcast “Throughline.”

The webinar series will focus on the skills journalists need to create engaging audio stories, from finding the right idea to producing a finished podcast. Participants will learn how to think about storytelling for the ear, use interviews and sound effectively, and develop strategies for publishing and reaching their intended audiences.

Across two 90-minute live sessions, participants will learn how to:

  • Develop and refine reporting ideas that work as compelling podcast stories.
  • Understand when and why audio is the right format for a story.
  • Structure audio narratives with strong pacing, clarity and engagement.
  • Write for the ear and use the human voice to tell more effective stories.
  • Conduct interviews and use sound to strengthen audio storytelling.
  • Understand the basics of podcast production, publishing and audience development.

The sessions will include practical examples, demonstrations and techniques that journalists can apply to their own audio projects. Participants will also receive access to webinar recordings after the live sessions.

Registration is $65 and includes access to both live sessions, webinar recordings, practical resources to help journalists develop their podcasting skills, and a certificate of attendance.

Whether you’re creating your first podcast or looking to strengthen an existing audio project, this series will provide tools to help you create journalism podcasts that engage listeners and expand the reach of your reporting.

If you want to explore new ways to tell stories through audio and connect with audiences in a more personal way, register now for “Podcasting for Journalists: How to Create Audio Stories That Reach Audiences.”

The webinar series takes place September 10 and 17, 2026, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time).
