The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ second offering of the popular webinar “Search Engine Optimization Strategies for Journalists” attracted 86 journalists on Oct. 23. The two-hour webinar was conducted by Hiram Enriquez.

The webinar addressed the core benefits of SEO for digital journalists, such as attracting the correct audience, bringing in readers from search engines and directing online users to the appropriate sections of their websites. Participants interacted with Enriquez through the training platform and were able to immediately test the strategies they were learning in evaluating the optimization level of their own sites. Enriquez wants webinar participants to understand these technical strategies from the editorial side.

When asked about his experience, Miguel Kertesz, a journalist from Uruguay, said, “I’m interested in improving myself as a journalist, and constantly strive towards a better use of the technology within our reach.”

Enriquez finds the webinar training to be an enriching learning experience for all involved. “It is great to have the opportunity to interact with students from different parts of the U.S. and Latin America, since we are all learning and it is great to see different perspectives that emerge in these discussions,” he said.

Enriquez, who currently works for Univision Interactive, was previously part of the Webbmedia Group, Yahoo! Latin America, and hosted and created “Zona Digital” on CNN in Spanish.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin was launched in 2002 by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves. Thanks to generous grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the center has assisted thousands of journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
