Knight Center offers a webinar in Spanish on data journalism

This post is also available in: English Spanish Portuguese (Brazil)

Journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean can learn about data journalism during a two hour webinar in Spanish that the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will offer on Friday, August 17. The instructor will be Argentine journalist Sandra Crucianelli, who is currently a Knight International Journalism Fellow of the International Center for Journalists.

What is data-driven journalism? How can journalists use digital tools to find and present large quantities of data? Sandra Crucianelli, a veteran journalist and journalism trainer, has been on the front lines of this new genre of journalism and has already trained hundreds of Latin American journalists on how to use digital tools in their reporting work.

The live, two-hour webinar will take place on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 at 9:00 AM (Austin time). Check here to find out the corresponding time in your city. For example, 9:00 AM in Austin will be the same time in Bogota, Lima and Mexico City, but 8:00 AM in Central America, 11:00 AM in Brasilia and Buenos Aires, and 10:00 AM in Santiago.

The number of participants is limited, and registration is taking place through this link. Registration will remain open until Thursday, Aug. 16 at 12 p.m. (Austin time). Those who attend the webinar will need to pay a $25 administrative fee online.

A webinar works like an in-person seminar or presentation. The participants will be able to hear the instructor and watch on their computer screens a PowerPoint presentation and other visual materials and demonstrations. They will also be able to interact with the instructor via chat, asking questions or making comments. Participants need a broadband connection to the Internet and the use of headphones is highly recommended.

Crucianelli’s webinar will help journalists to understand the techniques and tools of the practice of data journalism that is being adopted by newsrooms all over their countries around the world, and how journalists can apply it in the newsroom. Journalists will learn how to easily extract data from documents, as well as how to use simple tools for processing and visualization of data.

Those attending should have basic knowledge of English (for reading materials given during webinar) and if possible, basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
