Data-driven journalism – or the set of skills to filter information, analyze it and create databases – has become an indispensable tool for journalists trying to help audiences make sense of ever-growing sources of information.

For a second time, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering the two-hour webinar “Data-driven Reporting,” with Aron Pilholfer, The New York Times’ interactive news editor and co-founder of the nonprofit organizations DocumentCloud and Hack & Hackers.

The webinar will help participants to get an overview of data-driven journalism in all of its forms and flavors, from data visualization and news apps to computer-assisted reporting. Participants will learn about the latest tools and technologies, and how participants can get started in their newsrooms using these tools.

The webinar will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. (CST). Check here to find out the corresponding time in your city. To register for the webinar, please click here.

Pilhofer was the instructor of the same popular webinar last year. In it, Pilhofer will explain how the leading news outlets in the U.S. have embraced the practice of data-driven journalism and seized the opportunity to produce more relevant and informative stories. He will also provide a number of valuable tools and resources that journalists can access for free to get started.

The number of participants is limited and registration will remain open until Wednesday, Dec. 5 by 12 p.m. (CST). Those who attend the webinar will need to pay a $30 administrative fee online. Participants will receive a certificate from the Knight Center.

A webinar works like an in-person seminar or presentation. The participants will be able to hear the instructor and watch on their computer screens a PowerPoint presentation and other visual materials and demonstrations. They will also be able to interact with the instructor via chat, asking questions or making comments. Participants need a broadband connection to the Internet and the use of headphones is highly recommended.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created in 2002 by Professor Rosental Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism, thanks to generous donations from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Center also receives contributions from other donors, including the Open Society Foundations and The University of Texas at Austin. The Center’s main goal is to help journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean improve the quality of journalism in their countries.
