Satiric Infotainment in the Digital Age

Discover how satire is reshaping political communication in the digital age!

Join the Knight Center’s free two-week online course, “Satiric Infotainment in the Digital Age,” from April 21 to May 4, 2025, and explore how satire challenges traditional media and shapes public discourse.

This course is designed for journalists, media professionals, influencers, and communicators who are interested in, working with, or looking to deepen their understanding of satirical infotainment.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the impact of satire on sociopolitical communication.
  • Examine how satire adapts to various national and cultural contexts.
  • Apply techniques and models to create effective satirical media.
  • Assess the relationship between journalism and satire in digital media.

This course is asynchronous, meaning there are no required live events, and you can complete activities at your own pace throughout each week.

The material is organized into two modules covering various topics through videos, guest speakers, readings, and discussion forums:

Introduction Module – Sociopolitical Satire in the Time of the Internet

Upon registration, you’ll gain access to this module, which sets the foundation for the course. You’ll explore key concepts such as satire, infotainment, and discursive integration, providing a framework for understanding the evolving role of satire in digital media.

Module 1 – Political Satire in the 21st Century

This module explores the resurgence of political satire in the early 2000s, highlighting the influence of sociopolitical and media contexts in shaping satiric media. It examines satiric infotainment as a hybrid form of alternative media.

Module 2 – Resources on Writing/Producing Satire

This module provides practical approaches and recommendations for writing and producing satire. It builds on the insights from the previous module, offering best practices and how-to resources from experienced practitioners.

Dr. Paul Alonso, an Associate Professor at Georgia Tech, holds a Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. His books “Satiric TV in the Americas” (Oxford University Press, 2018) and “Digital Satire in Latin America” (University Press of Florida, 2024) are pioneer studies on the convergence of journalism, entertainment, satire, politics and digital cultures in Latin America. He has also published the book “Thirty Years of Entertainment and Politics in Peru” (Editorial Planeta, 2022), and his research has appeared in journals such as the Latin American Research Review, The Journal of Popular Culture, Bulletin of Latin American Research, The Journal of Iberian and Latin American Studies, and included in edited collections. A former journalist for international newspapers, magazines and digital outlets, he is also the author of four books of fiction. His last novel, “Casi Rocanrol” [Almost Rock n’ Roll] (Editorial Planeta, 2024), is a satirical account of a journalist’s excessive adventures during the first decade of the century. Alonso was also the host of Gente Como Uno [GCU, People Like Us], a satirical show of interviews in Peru. Before joining Georgia Tech, Alonso was a staff member of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. He is currently the director of Polivision, a bilingual and multimedia outlet based in Atlanta that covers Latin American and Global Cultures. In 2024, he received a Fulbright Scholar Award.
