The role of infographics in the age of big data: Knight Center offers webinar in Spanish with Alberto Cairo

Learn about some of the tendencies that will dominate the discussion surrounding infographics and data visualization in the next few years with the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ next webinar in Spanish, “An Insightful Art: the Role of Infographics and Visualization in the Age of Big Data,” with instructor Alberto Cairo.

Registration is now closed for the live, two-hour webinar that will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

In this session, Cairo, who emphasized the importance of planning graphics in terms of their functionality during the Knight Center’s highly popular MOOC “Introduction to Infographics and Data Visualization,” will now discuss and expand on other design considerations like narrative structure and an infographic’s ability to provide insight and change people’s opinions.

“In my book ‘The Functional Art’ the focus was that the form of a graphic must adapt to the form of the story being told. But functionality is just one of the dimensions that a graphic can have. In this webinar I want to present some ideas that are also important and that I will develop in my following book,” Cairo said.

Cairo is a renowned expert in the field of infographics. He is currently a professor at the University of Miami’s School of Communication and has taught several regular online courses at the Knight Center’s distance learning platform, including two editions of the Knight Center’s first Massive Open Online Course, “Introduction to Infographics and Data Visualization,” which drew more than 7,000 participants from around the world.

Cairo’s webinar will serve as a general overview of the world of infographics and will be useful for both people trying to learn more about this discipline and more seasoned designers who want to catch up on the latest trends.

The number of participants is limited, and registration is taking place through this link. Registration will remain open until Monday, Aug. 12 (Austin time). Those who participate in the webinar will receive a certificate from the Knight Center.

A webinar works like an in-person seminar or presentation. The participants will be able to hear the instructor and watch on their computer screens a PowerPoint presentation and other visual materials and demonstrations. They will also be able to interact with the instructor via chat, asking questions or making comments. Participants need a broadband connection to the Internet and the use of headphones is highly recommended.
